Polypores are usually tough and have non-removable pores (unlike the sponge-pored boletes). But there are polypores with stiff ‘gills’, maze-like hymeniums and other spore-producing structures. Polypores are primarily found growing from wood substrates. True polypores are in the order Polyporales. There are many fungi which appear to be true polypores, but they are either in the order Hymenochaetales, the Russulales, the Thelephorales or the Agaricales. All true polypores as well as all fungi with what appear to have non-sponge-like pores are listed below.
There are many polypores and other fungi that appear to have a smooth hymenium that grow from dead wood. These include stereums, which are in the Stereaceae family of the Russulales order, as well numerous crust fungi which are found growing on wood. To view them and read about their characteristics, click the QUICK LINKS to Crust fungi and Stereums.
Some stiff-pored fungi and crust fungi are mycorrhizal associates of trees, such as species of Albatrellus and related fungi (such as Laeticutis cristatus, Neoalbatrellus caeruleoporus, and Xanthoporus peckianus) and species in the genus Coltricia!
