Amanita muscaria var. guessowii is a primarily a conifer associate, although it can also be found with hardwoods. It ranges in color from bright orange yellow to paler yellow with white to tan warts and often marginal striations with maturity. The white to cream gills are close to crowded and are narrowly attached to the stem. There are many shorter gills of varying length and distribution. The  shaggy stipe can be yellow, cream or white. The skirt-like partial veil color also is variable, and located on the upper stem. The bottom f the stipe and the upper part of the bulbous base bear rings of volval material.
