ALBATRELLACEAE family in the Russulales

There are currently nine genera in the Albatrellaceae family. While some include hypogeous fungi and the corticoid Byssoporia, we more commonly encounter the pored cap and stem fungi, Albatrellus, Laeticutis and Neoalbatrellus. The latter two are mycorrhizal associates of hardwoods or conifers. They are terrestrial and do not fruit from dead or living wood. While they are often thought of as polypores, most are not related to genera in the Polyporales, but rather to families in the Russulales as determined by genetic analysis.
