Pholiota populnea (Pers.) Kuyper & Tjall.-Beuk 1986 (Pholiota destruens)
This Pholiota is another saprotrophic wood-rotter. It can be found growing in clusters on dead cottonwood trees, which tend to favor river environments. The scales on the pale yellow to yellow-brown cap and the veil are cottony and whitish. The flesh is whitish. It has closely-spaced white gills, many of them short, that turn brownish with age. Another name for this fungus is Hemipholiota populnea.
