Lactarius cinereous var. cinereus has a smooth, viscid grayish cap with an inrolled margin that becomes flat with age. The center of the cap is typically darker and somewhat umbilicate. The gills are subdecurrent and close. Latex is white and unchanging. Occurs on the ground with hemlock, pines and beech. Taste is acrid.
