Gymnopilus penetrans is a relatively small orange-brown smoooth to felty mushroom with a paler margin found on dead conifer and ocasionally on hardwood. The gills are yellow, attached and close. As the rust-brown colored spores mature, the gills become rust-brown with rusty spotting. The yellow stem becomes orange-brown and bears whitish vertical fibers. There is little to no evidence of a ring on the stem. Like other species of gymnopilus, the taste is very bitter.
