Lyophyllum decastes 

The “fried Chicken Mushroom’ Choice.  (Some people are allergic to them).

Probably a species complex.

Terrestrial saprotroph. Fruits summer and fall.

Grows in clusters in woods and in disturbed areas, gravel driveways, paths. Gray-brown to yellow-brown caps, slightly decurrent white gills and white to brownish stem. Fruits late summer and early fall.

Remove entire clump, throw away any over the hill fruiting bodies. Sauté in butter until golden brown. Good in stews, sauces, soups or on its own.  This is in the Lyophyllaceae family in the Agaricales order of the Basidiomycota.
