Collybia cookei differs from Collybia tuberosa in having round yellow sclerotia attached to their basal mycelium rather than elliptical reddish-brown sclerotia. Like the latter, they can be found growing from decayed mushrooms. Another small and similar appearing mushroom is Collybia cirrhata, which lacks sclerotia.
