Serpula himantioides

What? Crust? 05064

Serpula himantioides is related to the dry rot fungus Serpula lacrymans, which can destroy timber in houses. However, it requires wet conifer wood to fruit and causes brown cubical rot of debarked dead conifer wood. A pathogenic fungus, it is not visible until the tree has fallen and has lost its bark. Its presence causes heart rot of tree bases and roots.
