Pluteus aurantiorugosus is a decomposer of dead hardwoods. At first it is a brilliant red-orange fading to orange-yellow with age. Often it has a central knob and appears to be somewhat bumpy. The gills turn pinkish as the spores mature. Sometimes the outer edge of the gills near the  cap margin becomes yellowish.
