Calvatia bovista


Calvatia bovista is the second largest calvatia after Calvatia giganteus. Sterile base takes up the lower half of the fruit body. Edible if pure white inside. If it starts to change color, the taste will be sour. Can be found late summer, early autumn in open woodlands. Spore mass is olive-brown. This is a gasteromycete, or stomach fungi in the Agaricaceae family of the Agaricales order of the Basidiomycota division.
