Phaeocalicium polyporeum is a tiny fungus that can be found throughout the year on the bracket polypore Trichaptum biforme. At less than a milimeter high, it looks a bit like a burnt black liliputian matchstick, thus one of its common names is  ‘Black Matchstick Fungus’. It may a lichenicolus fungi or possibly be related to lichens in some way.
