Echinoderma asperum

Echinoderma asperum (Lepiota aspera) 1088

Echinoderma asperum (Lepiota acutesquamosa, Lepiota aspera) is a head scratcher. In the past it has understandably been considered an Amanita, an Agaricus and a Lepiota - among other genera. It has a warm brown convex to flat scaly cap, very crowded free gills, a thick partial veil which becomes a large floppy ring on a scurfy brown bulbous stalk that becomes equal with maturity below the ring. White rhizomorphs can be found at the stipe base. The spores are white. This substantial mushroom is typically found growing in groups in wood chip debris. It is possible that this North American species is genetically different from the European version described by the french mycologist, Marcel Bon.
