Tapinella atrotomentosa (Batsch) Šutara 1992 (Paxillus atrotomentosus)
Commonly known as the ‘Velvet-footed Pax’, Tapinella atrotomentosa is a dense and relatively large fungus bearing a thick brownish-tan cap with an inrolled margin that becomes wavy as it opens and develops a depressed disc. The gills are are creamy-yellow, close, and forked. Its ‘foot’ or stipe is velvety dark brown and usually off-center. It appears in summer through autumn on conifer stumps. Insects apparently find this attractive fungus it unappetising. This mushroom is in the Tapinellaceae family of the Boletales order.
