Geastrum triplex Jungh. 1840
It is found under hardwoods from summer through late winter. Saprobic. Outer rays extend and push up the spore case so spores have a better chance of being dispersed by breezes. Spore case appears as though it sits on a saucer. At the top is the beak where spores emerge. It is a gasteroid or ‘stomach’ fungus that produces its spores within an enclosed outer skin called a peridium. It is in the Gasteraceae family of the Gasterales order.
