This polypore is in the Ischodermataceae family of the Polyporales. (Previously it was in the Fomitopsidaceae. It looks very similar to the more common Ischnoderma resinosum. Its habitat is different. Ischnoderma benzoinum fruits on dead conifer wood, as opposed to the wood of broadleaved trees. It is more common in northernly latitudes. It fruits in autumn.
