The common name of Lactarius turpis is the "Ugly Milk Cap”. It has a dark olive-brown shallowly depressed cap with a VISCID CENTER and inrolled hairy margin in young specimens. Cream-colored crowded gills with EDGE BROWNING. Short stipe with circular pits. LATEX acrid, abundant and white but becoming GREY-GREEN on drying. Grows in association with and under birch in mixed woods.
