Russula compacta Frost, 'Compact Russula’
"Firm Russula” Solid cap is white to beige becoming cinnamon. Dense white flesh discolors on exposure to air. Unpleasant fishy odor as it ages. Gills are attached, close to crowded and whitish becoming warm-brown with handling. Whitish stipe also stains reddish-brown. White spore print. Found in mxed woods growing alone or scattered in summer and fall. Mycorrhizal. Common. Fruits even during dry spells. 'Compacta' means "solid" or "compact.” It is in the Russulaceae family of the Russulales.
