Laccarias are in the Hynangiaceae family.

Variable colors and shaped from youth through maturity, therefore called ‘the deceivers’. Widely-spaced waxy gills are color of cap, but turn whitish as spores mature. Prefer cooler temperatures.

Mycorrhizal with many different trees. Found in groups under conifers in the Pine family, oaks, beech and birch. Though small, can collect many of them to make a dish.

Mild tasting and edible.
